2017 Annual Report

Nita and Don Reed have been long-time donors to medical research in the United States. However, a personal cancer diagnosis for Nita suggested that their generosity would also be beneficial closer to home. Touched by the kindness and understanding shown to them by everyone at The Princess Margaret, the Reeds made a $1 million donation in support of radiation oncologist, Dr. John Waldron’s cancer research. Nita and Don Reed’s Transformational Gift to Cutting-Edge Cancer Research “We think it’s a real privilege to be able to give something back,” says Don Reed. “There are so many other families who feel just the same way that we do about their doctor and all the caring staff at the cancer centre,” says Nita Reed. “It’s the whole culture of the cancer centre that we have never encountered anywhere else.” Shiu Pong Group Supporting World-Leading Immunotherapy Research Immunotherapy is poised to become the 4th pillar of cancer treatment. The Princess Margaret is leading the way in this exciting area of cancer research. Earlier this year, Henry and Daniel Hung, principals of the Shiu Pong Group, made a commitment of $500,000 in support of Dr. Tak Mak’s immunotherapy team. Passionate about funding education, Shiu Pong Group’s gift is directed towards fostering the future leaders of cancer research. With these funds, Dr. Tak Mak was able to expand his team and recruit three post-doctoral researchers to The Princess Margaret.
