WHY is The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation

one of Canada’s best-in-class social enterprises?

Strong leadership from a

high-calibre Board of Directors

D

uring this fiscal year, Stephen Bear

completed his two-year term as Chair

of the Board of Directors for the

Foundation. During his tenure, Steve helped

launch the

BILLION DOLLAR CHALLENGE

,

our 5-year initiative to revolutionize cancer

care by creating a new gold standard:

Personalized Cancer Medicine. Steve’s

leadership of the Board was instrumental

in bringing forward new strategies of

stewardship and granting to ensure

maximum impact from philanthropic funding.

The Foundation achieved record net

revenue under Steve’s thoughtful guidance.

We are delighted that he has decided to

remain on the Board as a Director and now

chairs the vitally important

Granting, Impact

and Stewardship Committee

. Steve was

present at so many of our donor events and

activities. We are beyond grateful to Steve

for his leadership, advice, and insightful

strategic guidance.

Stephen is succeeded by Tom Ehrlich.

Tom is a 30-year veteran of the commercial

real estate industry and is the President of

Tanurb Developments Inc. and Ehrlich Asset

Management Inc.

Tom has served on the Board since 2008, and

has held the positions of both Vice-Chair of

the Foundation Board and as the inaugural

Chair of the Foundation’s

Granting, Impact

and Stewardship Committee

.

After being treated at The Princess Margaret

in 1999, Tom created the Invest in Research

Program, recruiting other ‘investors’ from

his great network of friends and work

colleagues. To-date, the program has raised

more than $1.6 million and supported 12

research projects at The Princess Margaret.

When he stepped into the Vice-Chair

position, the leaders of the cancer centre

called on Tom’s real estate expertise to help

in the expansion of the research enterprise

to the Princess Margaret Cancer Research

Tower. His direct and extensive involvement

helped Princess Margaret researchers

relocate to this new tower in a very cost-

efficient manner. Tom leads from the front

and rides, runs, does sprint triathlons, shaves

his head and participates personally in

almost every Princess Margaret event.
