2017 Annual Report

“Dealing with career disruptions, relationship issues, talking about reproduction - these are all unique needs for adolescents and young adults (AYAs) facing cancer,” explains Aaron Hart. Aaron’s brother, Michael, began to grapple with these issues when he was diagnosed with non-hodgkin’s lymphoma at age 24. Michael received treatment at The Princess Margaret until he passed away, one year later. Aaron’s family established the Michael Kamin Hart Award for Excellence in AYA Oncology Care at The Princess Margaret. To support the growth of the AYA Oncology Hearts for Hart Tournament Raises Funds for AYA Program Program as a whole – the only program of its kind in Canada – they also helped establish the annual Hearts for Hart Golf Tournament, along with Michael’s hockey coach and former teammates. This year, the Hearts for Hart Golf Tournament celebrated its fourth anniversary and has raised close to $300,000 since inception. In its rst year, 140 people rolled out their yoga mats and raised over $100,000 at Yoga to Conquer Cancer - an event that features two amazing yoga classes to raise funds for The Princess Margaret. Commitee members and top fundraisers, Mandy Dermer and Courtney Fireman dedicated their practice to their loved ones. Dermer’s sister is a breast cancer survivor. “I think yoga is a really great tool to help people who are ghting cancer. It helps get them through a dif cult time in their life,” said Mandy. Courtney, unfortunately lost her mother to cancer. “I just hope to make a difference in our lifetime,” says Fireman. “I think yoga gives people the tools to feel good about themselves.” Yoga to Conquer Cancer Raises over $100,000 in its First Year Mandy Dermer & Courtney Fireman practising their poses at The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation The Hart family with members of the AYA team 42 | 2017 Report to Our Donors TRANSFORMATIONAL EVENTS
