WHY IS IN OUR DNA.
T
hanks to generous donors,
Princess Margaret Cancer
Centre has established the
Wallace McCain Centre for
Pancreatic Cancer
where staff
are focused on the diagnosis
and treatment of this deadly
disease. The
Wilfred G. Lewitt Chair
in Pancreatic Cancer Research
will allow the cancer centre to
deepen its understanding of the
disease at the molecular level and
translate this understanding into
improved therapies for patients.
• It is estimated that 4,800
Canadians will be diagnosed
with pancreatic cancer in 2015
• The five-year survival rate for
pancreatic cancer patients is
only 8%
• Pancreatic cancer is the fourth
leading cause of cancer death
Through The Princess Margaret Cancer
Foundation, the Lewitts have supported
rapid diagnosis efforts, palliative care, and
established a five-year fellowship in pancreatic
cancer. But given the deadliness of pancreatic
cancer, they felt strongly about helping to
accelerate the pace of new research discoveries.
So this year, they decided to
commit $3 million
to fund Canada’s first Chair in pancreatic
cancer research—the
Wilfred G. Lewitt Chair in
Pancreatic Cancer Research.
