Drs. Gelareh Zadeh and Ken Aldape
A new neuro-oncology centre ‘with a touch of honey’
R
on MacFeeters lived a long and
inspiring life, but passed away on
December 7, 2014, shortly after his
100th birthday. His love of learning and his
passion for giving back to his community
were exemplary, and they were qualities
that made their mark on the research leaders
at The Princess Margaret.
He served in the Signal Corps in Ottawa
during WWII, and then returned to Toronto
to work with his father perfecting a recipe
for honey butter which he manufactured at
MacFeeters Creamery on Jarvis Street until
1971 when he sold the business.
Ron always had an interest in medical
research, but after his daughter, Sheila, was
diagnosed with a brain tumour, he took a
much more active interest. Along with Sheila,
his daughter Laura and his sister-in-law,
Elizabeth Hamilton, Ron pledged $5 million
to The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation
to create the
MacFeeters Hamilton Centre for
Neuro-Oncology Research
. A gift of $1 million
in Ron’s will fulfilled this pledge.
World-leading neuro-pathologist, Dr. Ken
Aldape, has been recruited from one of the
top cancer centres in the United States to
lead the new Centre. Dr. Gelareh Zadeh, one
of our accomplished surgeon scientists, is
joining Dr. Aldape, co-leading the effort and
establishing her laboratory at the Centre.
