Continuing a family legacy of support
J
ack Weinbaum was the type of friend we
all need to have. When his close friend,
Ronnie Appleby, was diagnosed with
prostate cancer, Jack supported him through
the diagnosis, treatment and recovery.
Along the way, Jack had the opportunity
to observe the care that his friend received
at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, and he
was impressed. But he also became very
aware of the increasing number of men
who were being impacted by the disease,
the complexity of the disease, and the side
effects of the different types of treatment.
Jack and his wife, Anne, donated $2 million
in honour of Ronnie to help the team at
The Princess Margaret to build an extensive
patient-outcome database. With this
database, researchers have been studying
the value of regular exercise, nutrition, and
psychosocial counseling in improving
patient quality of life, and the potential
role of lifestyle changes in slowing disease
progression and/or preventing prostate
cancer recurrence.
Funds have also helped to establish a
comprehensive survivorship program for
prostate cancer patients—the first in North
America.
Sadly, Jack passed in December of last
year, but his children, Carol and Allan, are
continuing the legacy of their parents.
Through their family foundation, they have
donated $250,000 to support the world-
leading program that their father and
mother helped to build.
