On October 15, 2015, The Princess Margaret
Cancer Foundation brought together
representatives from Toronto’s Chinese
community for a special evening called Champion
of Hope. It was an exclusive ‘up close and
personal’ opportunity for attendees to mingle
with and hear from some of Canada’s leaders
in cancer care and research, and pay tribute to
one of their highest achievers, Dr. Tak Mak. He is
one of the world’s most accomplished research
scientists who has spent most of his career at The
Princess Margaret. Dr. Mak is also beloved by a
large community of people who have helped to
raise funds for his research into women’s cancers
at The Princess Margaret. He has become a face
associated with medical progress and innovation.
The evening, generously hosted by BMO Financial
Group, included remarks from leaders of the Chinese and Princess Margaret communities, and concluded
with a wonderful surprise for Dr. Mak—a performance by one of his favourite musical artists, Canadian guitar
legend Liona Boyd.
The Foundation is extremely grateful to Mrs. Helen Ching-Kircher and Dr. Ming-Tat Cheung, the co-Chairs of
the event. It was a wonderful success and raised over $85,000 thanks to their guidance and support, as well
as their efforts to promote the event among their many friends and colleagues.
Celebrating a true champion
In 2005, Imam Dr. Hamid Slimi founded Faith of Life
Network to focus the attention of North American
Muslims on the importance of the image of Islam and
the need for Muslim collaboration in local community
service. In addition to serving the Muslim community
in the Greater Toronto Area through Sayeda Khadija
Centre, the Network is providing education about
the religion of Islam through the web and multimedia,
interfaith programs and social events.
Because cancer impacts the Muslim community as
significantly as it does others, Dr. Slimi has spent
time learning about the world-leading research
taking place at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.
He invited Laura Moretti, Director, Ethnocultural
Strategy at The Princess Margaret Cancer
Foundation to their annual fundraising banquet to
talk about the important progress taking place at
the centre.
This year, Faith of Life Network made a generous
donation of $50,000 to The Princess Margaret as part
of a $100,000 commitment.
